Zoom Schedule:
Â
HOMEROOM
Ms Vidal’s Writing Assignments – to be done on lined paper
All writing assignments need to be 3 paragraphs: introduction, middle (body – details), and conclusion
Don’t forget to indent for each paragraph/ each paragraph needs at least 3 sentences/ add a title
Week 3:Â Describe a typical “school” day. (paragraph 1: morning/ paragraph 2: afternoon/ paragraph 3: evening)
Week 4: Creative writing topic: You are the security guard at the zoo and someone has stolen a rhinoceros! How do you track down the thief?Â
Week 5: Persuassive writing topic: Do you agree or disgree? Choose one of these two topics to write about–
1) Homework should be optional. ORÂ 2) Pets should be allowed in school.
Week 6: Creative writing topic – Mystery Genre :Â Someone in your family’s household has been stealing the cookies from the cookie jar at night. You set up an elaborate surveillance system in order to catch the culprit. Include details about your plan from beginning to end. Do you catch the thief? (Note: If you want to add other family members or friends to this scenario – especially for those who live with very few people right now – that’s fine.)
Week 7: Genre – Autobiography. You are to write about yourself from your point of view. Use “I” in your writing since this is an autobiographical piece. You can choose what you want to write about. For example, it can be about your memories of yourself as a toddler or younger self. It can be about a significant event that happened to you in the past. You can write about yourself at different ages (one paragraph for each age). The idea is that the piece focuses on you and your life.
Week 8: Class Clown Alternate Ending – Write a one paragraph alternate ending to Class Clown. You can also rewrite another chapter to give it a different twist, if you prefer. Try to focus on changing the outcome of the chapter and how it affects the characters involved. You can have fun and be creative with this assignment, but please do not be overly silly. It still needs to be a realistic change. Â
Week 9: The War with Grandpa writing – Peter feels that grown-ups always win arguments. Describe a time where you had a disagreement with your parents, or that they wouldn’t let you do or have something. What was the outcome? Who won? How did you feel? (This can be written as one paragraph or three paragraphs, depending on how you want to structure your writing.)Â
Week 10: The War with Grandpa creative writing – Peter completes his first attack on Grandpa Jack. He sets his alarm clock to 3am to wake him up in the middle of the night. Pretend you are Peter. What would you do for your next attack on Grandpa. Use a lot of detail and structure your writing into three paragraphs.             (Example: paragraph 1 – How you would plan your attack? Would you send another note? / paragraph 2 – What happens during the attack? / paragraph 3 – How does it end? How does Grandpa react? How do you feel?)
Week 11/last writing assignment: Write a paragraph about how you feel about moving on to fourth grade. From fourth grade on, things are done differently at Garden. You eat in the cafeterria; you have a different teacher for each subject; you have a locker; you must be more independent; etc. What are you excited about? What are you looking forward to the most? Are you nervous or anxious about anything? What do you hope to learn? Â

Celebrating NYC at Rockefeller Center
To honor the city that built us, we’re getting creative – by inviting you to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to design the iconic flags at Rockefeller Center. This summer, we will raise your artwork on the 192 flagpoles surrounding the rink to celebrate New York’s diverse culture, vibrant energy and strength. The prompt is simple: Show your love for New York

Hello everyone here is a link for anyone who missed the Zoom.
Art Update May 12
Hello everyone I hope everyone is doing well. This week I want to go back to drawing and try something called metamorphosis art. For this project I want you will transform an object into another object. The way to do this is by drawing several drawings that gradually turn one object into another. I know sounds hard, but I think the examples below will make this assignment make sense. There is no limit on the amount of drawings you can do, but you should have at least three. You are free to use any medium and size paper of your choice. I remember doing a project like this in middle school and I loved it, I hope you do too. Due Date it Tuesday May 19th.

Art Distance Learning update April 14:
Good morning everyone! I hope all of you had a nice break; I know it is not easy being cooped up all day, but I hope you’re staying upbeat. Speaking of staying upbeat, one of the things I have noticed as I have walked through my neighborhood are families putting rainbows, hearts, and posters of encouragement in their windows or on sidewalks using chalk. So I think it would be a fantastic idea if the families at Garden did the same. In the Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/document/d/17CqCzZ4q3d86qigNLS8lGOvSxuF2ShIU7d-Hw6VUW5g/edit?usp=sharing) there are examples that you can use for inspiration. Also, if you haven’t done so already, please send me pictures of your work, especially the Super Hero Doctor because I want to get those out to hospitals ASAP. Have a wonderful week and I’ll see you on Zoom later this week!
PS if you use a permanent marker, try putting olive oil on the drawing, it’ll really make it stand out!

MUSIC
Hello, 3rd Graders and 3rd Grade Parents. I hope everyone is well. I think this is a good opportunity to engage in some movement since many of us are a bit less active at home. As a continuation of the most recent new activity we did together in the classroom, I am posting audio of the Beatles song “Blackbird” along with the counts and movements we performed (both appear below).Â
If you want a challenge, sing the song while you move. Also, see if you can come up with your own movements for measures of 4, 3, and 2 to perform along with the song. They need to be ones you can do quickly, since the counts go by quite fast. Best of luck!

Hello, 3rd Graders and 3rd Grade parents. I am posting a link to a video about the great Rock and Roll pioneer, Carl Perkins. I am also attaching a puzzle worksheet to accompany it. You can email the worksheet after you complete it at THeineman@GardenSchool.org. Good luck!

4/1/20
Here is a 1950s dance and a Carl Perkins number with which to try the routine. Practice the movements slowly at first and work on bringing it up to speed before performing it with Carl Perkins (the music is fast). If you begin the routine with the word “Sitting” in the recording, it will fit nicely with the music and “Sitting” will kick off your second time through the routine. You can come up with your own steps, or bounce back and forth from your right to left foot if you can’t come up with anything. Happy dancing!

4/14/20
Welcome back, students and parents! I am posting a link to a video about the remarkable musician and innovator Earl Scruggs. I am also attaching a timeline worksheet to accompany it. The video is 12 minutes long, but the answers to the worksheet are revealed by the 7-minute mark; you don’t have to watch the entire video.
For an additional activity, copy and paste the link below into your address bar and right click and “save picture as” to download the image of the Earl Scruggs center in North Carolina. Go to the website https://im-a-puzzle.com/, click on “My pictures,” find the image on your computer and click “Open.” I would begin with medium level difficulty. Click “START” and your off to the races! Puzzle advice: look for corner and edge pieces first. Good luck!

Hello. This week, I am posting some information on sound and how we hear because it will form the base of our knowledge as we learn about certain musical instruments and technology in the coming weeks. This is new material for us, and you might find it difficult to comprehend, at first. Don’t be discouraged; we will discuss it in our upcoming Zoom class. I am also providing a link for a video that outlines the hearing process which you can watch if you want further reinforcement.

Hello, students and parents. As per yesterday’s Zoom lesson, I am posting a link to a video about one of the most notable artists in Popular Music, Stevie Wonder. I have included close captioning/subtitles, and this may help you in terms of picking up information and understanding what is said (if they don’t appear, you can click on “cc” on the bottom strip of the video). I am also attaching a puzzle worksheet to accompany it.
Additionally, I am posting the lyrics for Carl Perkins’ song, “Matchbox.” Please look them over so that we can sing the song in next week’s Zoom class. Thank you!

Hello, 3rd graders. Below is the link to a video pertaining to Joni Mitchell, an artist whom I would argue was without peer. I have once again included close captioning/subtitles, which I believe may be helpful (if they don’t appear, you can click on “cc” on the bottom strip of the video). I am not giving you any assignment to accompany the video.
