Music
Hello, 2nd Graders and 2nd Grade parents. I hope everyone is well. I want to begin by congratulating you on the great work you did on our sound project. As I told you, the first part was really strong, and I really look forward to hearing what you produce for the voices once we have a chance to complete the production.
Today, I think it’s a good opportunity to engage in some movement since many of us are a bit less active at home. Earlier in the year, we sang the Beatles song “Blackbird.” Part of what made the song challenging is how it is counted. Most of the time we count in 4, as with the majority of songs. Other times in the song, the counts shift to 3 or to 2. In fact, the song begins with a count of 3, then 4, before briefly shifting back to 3 when we begin singing. You may recall that you and I counted through portions of the song on our fingers.
You may first wish to try singing along with the song since it has been a while; the audio is posted below. Then open up and look at the attached counts and movement document. Try counting aloud along with the song.
I created movements for the song. They are as follows:
bars of 4 are clap (on beat one) and three marching steps
bars of 3 are jump (on beat one) and two pats on your thighs
bars of 2 are a slide to the side (on beat one) and a step to that side
Try performing the movements along with the song while following the counts in the document. If you are feeling ambitious once you can perform the movements accurately, see if you can sing the song while doing the motions. If you are feeling super ambitious, try to create your own movements for measures of 4, 3, and 2 to perform along with the song. They need to be ones you can do quickly, since the counts go by quite fast. Best of luck and happy moving!

Here is a 1950s dance and a Carl Perkins number with which to try the routine. Practice the movements slowly at first and work on bringing it up to speed before performing it with Carl Perkins (the music is fast). If you begin the routine with the word “Sitting” in the recording, it will fit nicely with the music and “Sitting” will kick off your second time through the routine. You can come up with your own steps, or bounce back and forth from your right to left foot if you can’t come up with anything. Happy dancing!

Welcome back, students and parents! I am posting a link to a video about the remarkable musician and innovator Earl Scruggs. I am also attaching a timeline worksheet to accompany it. The video is 12 minutes long, but the answers to the worksheet are revealed by the 7-minute mark; you don’t have to watch the entire video.
For an additional activity, copy and paste the link below into your address bar and right click and “save picture as” to download the image of the Earl Scruggs center in North Carolina. Go to the website https://im-a-puzzle.com/, click on “My pictures,” find the image on your computer and click “Open.” I would begin with medium level difficulty. Click “START” and your off to the races! Puzzle advice: look for corner and edge pieces first. Good luck!

Hello, students and parents. Below is the link to a video pertaining to Joni Mitchell, an artist whom I would argue was without peer. I have once again included close captioning/subtitles, which I believe may be helpful (if they don’t appear, you can click on “cc” on the bottom strip of the video). I am not giving you any assignment to accompany the video- just a coloring page you can do at your leisure.
