Garden School will be offering the annual Merit Scholarship Exam on Saturday, December 10th at 9 AM. The Merit Exam and the scholarships are eligible to both incoming new and current Garden students presently enrolled in grades 5-10.

Each year, close to 100 students participate in this competitive exam. Those students who achieve the best results are eligible for substantial scholarships ranging from 25%-100% of tuition, starting in September 2015 and continuing for the duration of their years at Garden School. This means that students who are currently in grades 5 through 10 are eligible to take the exam. Thus, a student winner entering Garden School as a sixth grader can expect to receive his or her scholarship award for seven years covered by the program. The scholarships can be worth as much as $120,000 in Garden School tuition fees over a seven-year period.

The Merit Scholarship Exam consists of sections on math concepts, math computation, vocabulary and reading comprehension, and will include a writing sample. After the Exam, finalists will be chosen and an interview and a review of current school records is part of the Merit Scholarship Application process.

Finalists will be contacted and invited for an interview and a copy of all relevant school records must be brought to the interview. Students are informed of the test results in writing by Friday, February 13, 2015.

Winning students need to maintain a B average, be good citizens of the school, and participate in the school’s community service program to ensure that the scholarship continues over the years. Recent winners of the scholarship at Garden School have gone on to such universities and colleges as Harvard, Dartmouth, NYU, MIT, and Cornell.

Founded in 1923, Garden School is an independent, co-ed, secular, college preparatory school that spans nursery through 12th grade. Garden School was the result of efforts by parents, teachers, and community leaders who wanted to create a school that places the academic and social interests of children at center. To this day, decisions about curriculum and academic achievement are made with students, not politics, in mind. And all of this takes place within a diverse, international environment in which there is no single majority. Consequently, ninety-nine percent of Garden School’s students go on to college immediately after graduation.
